Identifying Your Land Rover
or Range Rover Vehicle
In some cases, when ordering from our website, it is
necessary to identify the model and/or model
year of your vehicle. Although we try to make clear
which vehicle each part will fit, we cannot seperately
list application details for every single product we
sell. This document, therefore, is a guide only on
how to identify your vehicle and how we list our parts
to make sure you get the right part first time.
Please be sure to read notes 1, 2 and 3 at the end
of this page before ordering any products from us. |
Identifying Your Vehicle
Using the Chassis/Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The following applies to all vehicles manufactured from
1979 onwards (inclusive) that are not of
North American Specification (NAS)¹.
The most reliable way to identify the vehicle you own
is to look at the Chassis/VIN number. This is
stamped on a plate in the vehicle's engine compartment
and is unique to your vehicle. It is possible for
you to 'decode' this number to determine a large
number of things about the vehicle, including the
model and model year.
As can be seen in the diagram above, the chassis
number is a 17 digit sequence made up of numbers and
letters. In the diagram 'x' represents a
letter that changes on different vehicles, while 'n' represents
a number. The first 3 letters are always SAL, indicating
the vehicle is a made by Land Rover. The 'A' that
is the 11th digit of the chassis/VIN number is present
on all vehicles built at Land Rover's UK plant at
Solihull².

Identifying Your Vehicle's Model Year
The model year code is a two-letter sequence (above, highlighted
in red) that is found within the chassis/VIN number. It
is the 10th and 11th digits of the chassis/VIN number
and ends in 'A' on all vehicles built at Land Rover's
Solihull plant in the UK ².
The following list illustrates which model year and actual
calendar period each code corresponds to: |

| On items for which it is important to know
the correct model year, we have marked them as being
suitable for 'xA to xA Chassis Numbers', for
example a part that will only fit a 1990 to 1994 model year
Discovery will be marked as 'GA to LA Chassis Numbers'.
Following these guidelines ensures you will receive
the correct part. However, in some cases, changes
have occurred within a single model year. In this
case you will also require the Serial Number to
identify the part appropriate for your vehicle - please
see below. |
Identifying Your Vehicle's Serial Number
Under certain circumstances the serial number of the vehicle
may also be required. The serial number is a 6 number
sequence that is the last 6 digits of the chassis/VIN
number, following the model year code. It is unique
to each vehicle. Products requiring serial number information
will specify either a range, for example 'WA376580
to WA385948', or a number from which the range starts
or at which it stops, such as 'TA346793' or earlier', or 'WA385949
or later'.
If you are still unclear about any issue regarding
identification please e-mail us at: enquiries@famousfour.co.uk |
| Important: Please do not send your
whole chassis/VIN number over the internet (either by instant
message, or e-mail or any other non-encrypted means). We
will, under most circumstances, only require the last 8 digits
of the chassis/VIN number along with the model of the vehicle
and the type of engine. For security reasons we recommend
you do not disclose your whole vehicle chassis/VIN
number to other parties unless it is absolutely necessary.
NOTES:
1. If you suspect your vehicle is a NAS vehicle then please
contact us by e-mail before ordering any parts,
stating the year of manufacture of the vehicle and the
last 8 digits of the chassis number, as parts may vary
from the normal UK and Worldwide (non-NAS) Specification.
2. Should the 11th digit of your chassis/VIN number
not be 'A' you should contact us by e-mail before purchasing
any parts as your vehicle may not have been built in
the UK, and the number scheme, and thus the parts application,
may be different.
3. The numbering scheme for 'A' and 'B' model year
codes is not the same on all vehicles. Land Rover Series
III vehicles with 'A' codes were manufactured from 1979-1984.
Production of the Series III ceased in 1984. Range Rover
Classic vehicles with 'A' codes were manufactured from
1979-1984, followed by vehicles with 'B' codes from 1984-86.
The remaining Range Rover chassis numbers follow the
listed pattern. Land Rover 90 and 110 vehicles with 'A'
and 'B' codes are not easily distinguishable, but no
issues currently surround these vehicles that require
the model year to be known for the purposes of ordering
items from the FamousFour.com website.
